Lillie Langtry also maintained a successful racing stable at Newmarket. One of the most beautiful women of her time, she had many distinguished admirers, including the prince of Wales, subsequently King Edward VII. But it looks very much as if the plain black dress – and Langtry’s grasp of the nature of style – was the key to her social triumph. When she arrived in London she was in mourning for her favourite brother, and due to poverty, that black dress was the only one she had.
Faced with the necessity of making money, she decided to go on the stage, and she remained a successful if not brilliant actress for nearly thirty years. She became a naturalised American in 1887, and much of her later life was spent in the U.S.A. Lillie was discovered by high society when the Langtrys moved to London in 1875. Wearing a simple black dress and plain hairstyle at a party, Lillie captivated those artists present with her beauty and simplicity. She received the nickname “The Jersey Lily” from her portrait painted by John Everett Millais. Photographs and sketches of Lillie, produced by the hundreds, appeared in shop windows, making her an overnight sensation and one of the most popular “Professional Beauties” and trend-setters of the period.

He gained an unsavoury reputation because of affairs and, after his wife left him, he left Jersey in 1880. He had eloped to Gretna Green with Lillie's mother, who was known for her beauty. Proving too much for her French governess, Lillie was educated by her brothers' tutor, becoming unusually well educated for women of the time. As her relationship with the Prince waned, Lillie was suddenly beset by creditors and in need of an income. With characteristic determination, Lillie decided to employ her charms as an actress. She made a successful debut in 1881 in a charity production, then put together her own troupe, which toured the United States in 1882.
One of the houses on the site is named Langtry and another Hardy. The de Bathe properties were all sold in 1919, the same year Lady de Bathe sold Regal Lodge. The wedding between Langtry and de Bathe took place in St Saviour's Church, Jersey, on 27 July 1899, with Jeanne Marie Langtry being the only other person present, apart from the officials.

Gladstone's son Herbert Gladstone wrote a letter calling Wright a liar, a coward and a fool; Wright sued him. Langtry sold Regal Lodge and all her horse-racing interests in 1919 before she moved to Monaco. Regal Lodge had been her home for twenty-three years and received many celebrated guests, not least of whom was the Prince of Wales. Told of a good horse for sale in Australia called Merman, she purchased it and had it shipped to England; such shipments were risky and she had a previous bad experience with a horse arriving injured . Merman was regarded as one of the best stayers; he eventually went on to win the Lewes Handicap, the Cesarewitch, Jockey Club Cup, Goodwood Stakes, Goodwood Cup, and Ascot Gold Cup . Langtry later had a second Cesarewitch winner with Yentoi, and a third place with Raytoi.
At the suggestion of her close friend Oscar Wilde, Lillie embarked upon a stage career. In December 1881 she made her debut before the London public in She Stoops to Conquer at the Haymarket Theatre. The following autumn she made her first tour of the United States, to enormous success, which she repeated in subsequent years. While the critics generally condemned her, the public loved her. Langtry, with her awe-inspiring beauty and ambitious goals, inspired many of the modern day characters we love today.

The two saw one another only when she called on him for social gatherings or in brief private encounters. Her constant companion during this time was her close friend, Mathilde Peat. Lillie Langtry (13 October 1853 – 12 February 1929), born Emilie Charlotte Le Breton in Jersey, was an actress. A renowned beauty, she was nicknamed the "Jersey Lily" and had a number of prominent lovers, including the future king of England, Edward VII.
And although Langtry primarily admired him for his wealth, Edward felt differently. The only girl out of seven children, Langtry quickly realized that she needed to act like a boy to keep up with her brothers. She learned to hide her tears and to think fast on her feet, just like any bonafide young man growing up in her time. Of course, being a boy also meant getting into all kinds of trouble that no respectable girl would find herself in, and Langtry was more than happy to participate.

Lead was used less in the 1870s and 80s as makeup was considered vulgar and only hints of color were achieved through the use of lip salves, many of which were homemade. I love viewing paintings of that era but cannot imagine having to dress that way. It is interesting how fashions, architecture and interior design all seemed to blend. Black jewelry made of jet or black onyx was popular and could be worn during mourning periods when garments were restricted to black following the death of a loved one.
